I have just returned from treatment in a private clinic in Spain. I choose the private route as the public mental health care in most european countries does not offer the 1 on 1 treatment and care I needed. I was close to suicide just before I went. I had planned to go to the US to get treatement but all I could find were rehabs. I am not or ever was addicted to drugs precsribed or recreational but I have over self medicated when dangerously depressed to alleviate my symptoms. The clinic was fantastic and I did 55 hours of psychotherapy which really changed my mindset and how I think. I am now in control of my mind, on the minimum of medication and the extremes and polarisations of my behaviour and personality have been brought into control.. Yes it was a very expensive month but it saved my life and I am ready and willing to live a life less in the fast lane and as simple as possible now to avoid the peaks, troughs and constant crises I used to consume myself with.

My anxiety is still a problem, but doing Yoga and regulating my breathing does actually lessen the impact. There was a time when I couldnt get through the day without 60mg of valium and I have no intention of going back there.

I would stress the importance of psychotherapy for any one battling with a mental illness, it helps to rid oneself of the stick that we carry around and beat ourselves with as we have such a negative view of ourselves and in certain categories of the illness we have done things as result of our illness and lack of control that are embarrassing to live with when well. Psyhcotherapy empowers the person to learn to love themselves and learn to lessen the impact and harm that mental illness can cause.

The best way to find one is through recommendations but normally just by meeting with them and finding one that you feel comfortable with. It can be timely, but worth it in the end.

Also check out the internet for resources and link, they're plentifully.

I spent 2 years looking for a therapist i was comfortable with. I would be interested to know how other people went about finding their therapist.

Can anyone suggest a good first step one should make when first looking for a therapist?
